Improve your Memory – Link Method for Memory Improvement

Poor memory is not something for just the aged or mature adult, poor memory can affect anyone of any age.  There are many techniques that are available to help improve your memory, however not all are as easy as they like to make it claim to be.  Some require a lot of time, which in reality is partially the reason people tend to have poor memory, lack of time to pay adequate attention to things they need to store in their memory bank.

Recall is a developed technique that happens within our brain functioning from an early age.  If honed on, it can be quite sharp.  If one is lackey daisy about their memory, as in saying, I will have to make a mental note of that and although their brain may have taken note, they have not sufficiently gave it enough information for recall later when needed; the old memory bank will fail when drawing upon that particular information at a later date.

One method in helping develop a great memory is using a technique called the Link Method.  It helps you to recall stored information better due to the way you packed it away initially.  The Link method involves the use of mnemonics, an association between two things or items.  This gives the brain clues to later use in recall of that stored information.  This can be done in word association or by story association.

Say you are studying for a test, any class, and you have to be able to recall all the bones in the foot.  First, you would write out a list of all the bones in the foot.  After writing the list out which would look something like this:  5 metatarsals for each foot, 14 phalanges for each foot (3 phalanges for each toe per foot except the hallux, which only has 2), Talus, Calcaneus, Navicular, Cuboid, Internal cuneiform, Middle cuneiform, and the External cuneiform for a total of 26 bones per foot.

Next, you take the words and put them either in a story form or in a word association form, which ever is easier for you to recall.  In a word association it may be something like 5 metatarsals = 5 mega parcels = I am getting 5 mega parcels (metatarsals) tomorrow from 14 philanders = 14 phalanges.  You would continue in this fashion with word association until you have covered all the necessary words in the list.

In story association, you tell a story using a combination of word association and a story theme.  It may go something like this:  Five little metatarsals took off on a walk when out of the blue 14 scary looking fanged phalanges jumped out of a bush.  Each had three fangs except the little one, Hallux, who only had two.  Again, you would carry on similar to this until you have used all the listed words.  This is what is known as the Link Method.

The Link Method can be a reliable way to recall things, though it depends on the person remembering the story or the word associations.  However, this method with a combination of other methods can drastically help you improve your memory.  If you are having recall problems, improve your memory by learning valuable memory techniques at Memory Improvement

Memory Improvement and The Peg Method

Failing memory can be a scary thing; however, it does not mean that you have necessarily have a medical condition that is leading to your memory loss.  Often times hectic lives are enough to cause our memory to fail us when we are trying to recall something that otherwise would have been relatively simple to remember.

There are various ways one can go about trying to improve their memory skills in various memory improvement techniques.  However, some of the memory techniques recommended are tedious and simple put, hard to administer into ones daily life.  Take the Peg Method for instance.  The peg method may be great for using the chunking system for recalling phone numbers; however, its number and letter association is a lot to recall on its own.  If you have a large list of items you need to recall with out notes, if you do not have time to set up associations, the Peg method is not for you.

So how can one easily improve their memory skills?  First off, no two individuals are like and every one has a different style of learning.  Some people may be visual learners while others may be more hands on.  Others may do better by audio means of learning.

For learning memory improvement techniques, you have to take into consideration your learning style first.  Secondly, you have to consider the ease in the application of the skills taught.  Do you have time to administer them into your daily life?  Lastly if you learn on a multiple combination of learning styles, are the techniques offered flexible with your learning style.

For some, the Peg method may work wonders on helping them improve their memory; however, on others it may fall on deaf ears.  The best type of memory improvement techniques are those that can stimulate all learning styles and all your senses, well expect smell and taste unless you choose to snack while learning.  With techniques such as those taught in Memory Improvement courses you can sit and snack while learning valuable techniques that will vastly improve your memory but stimulating both sides of your brain and working with all learning styles.

What Are Some Good Memorization Techniques

From older students who want to jumpstart their brains to those who find that a faulty memory often results in confusion and increasing difficulty with completing tasks there are several memorization techniques that can make learning, remembering, and comprehending a simpler task. In fact, research shows that most people only remember 10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear, and 30% of what they see. Thus, you might find comfort in the fact that you are not the only one who is probably seeking to increase your memory skills!

There are two types of learners: auditory and visual. Your fist task before using any of the memorization techniques is to figure out which type of learning suits you the best because then you can identify which memorization techniques will work the most effectively for you.

Visual learners may find that taking notes, collecting diagrams and charts, or writing out symbols with mnemonics may help stimulate the brain. For those who are auditory learners, notes, mnemonics, flash cards, and videotaping speeches might help. Mnemonics can be helpful for auditory learners if rewritten or if associated with symbols. Remembering patterns can also help you remember. A well known example of a mnemonic is HOMES, the first letter of each of the Great Lakes. The idea of memorization techniques is loosely the same for each technique, if you can give yourself a hint in the right direction you will better be able to fill in the blanks using your comprehension skills.

Also, while memorization games such as flash cards, memory, and other games may not help you learn urgent material, playing games that involve a significant amount of memory will help you identify your learning style and stimulate your brain towards better memory. Thus, while you may not realize it, sharpening your brain can help you sharpen your memory for when you need it!
